Gregory Maqoma South Africa
Unpublished João Tordo’s text presented by Miguel Ponte with live illustration by Mantraste
is an hypnotic fusion of movement, music and text . It explores social, spiritiual and physical environment and its influences. In Beautiful Me Maqoma challenges the notion of dance by working with three choreographers Akram Khan, Faustin Linyekula and Vincent Sekwati Mantsoe. What inspired Maqoma to work with them is curiosity about their choreographic language, their connection to tradition and their styles, which are different from each other yet all, have something very profound and human in them.
Never before in Maqoma’s history of creation has he taken such a rigorous study and challenge of learning and mastering other’s choreographic language and knowledge.
Maqoma has been challenged to create an extension of the material provided to reflect his ingenious choreographic landscape but also to create a true reflection of his chosen artists embodied in his body. In this project, Maqoma treats his body as a moving portrait that continues to reinterpret emotions, histories and find a transitional point in tradition and language that evolves in finding creative translations for unfamiliar elements.
